GIJO PETER KOMORA

Human Rights Defender

A passionate human rights defender who was driven by the desire to see a great social change towards the communities that were being faced by human rights violation enforced by both state and non-state actors (especially corporates). He currently works as a programme officer – Land Rights in a community based organization (CBO) called Malindi Rights Forum; a grass root organization formed by ten self-help groups with like minds. The main objective of the umbrella organization is to advocate for members community land that was illegally and irregularly allocated to corporation (extractive industries).
He has expertise in community mobilization and it is one of his passions. He started mobilizing communities into solving their own issues through self driven initiatives through participatory and learning action.
Gujo Peter also ensures that the community works around conserving and managing the environment and holds corporates accountable. His work involves making decisions with community members and other partners and implementing them. Such decisions include holding community forums to share land and environmental laws and policies, engaging duty bearers into desired change, lobbying with policy makers into taking their interests to the levels of the tax payers they are representing. It is without a doubt that his work exposes him to several threats and risks but due to the passion he has for the people and the work he does, he solely works under the principle of “FORWARD EVER, BACKWARD NEVER “.
